Urban Impacts on the Mongolian Plateau

Entanglements of Economy, City, and Environment (2023–2027)

The Research Group FOR5438, funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) studies the impact of urban sites and their surrounding network of settlements on the environment on the Mongolian plateau. During the first phase, from 2023 to 2027, we concentrate our efforts on the time of the Mongol World Empire. The group consists of an interdisciplinary team from the humanities and natural sciences. The eight subprojects cover archaeology, remote sensing, geophysical prospection, soil sciences, bioarchaeology, archaeozoology, and palynology.

We officially began our work on August 1, 2023.
